How often do you get ready for the day and feel beautiful? Do you change clothes multiple times before you go somewhere? Do you just choose to wear black as oppose to colour because it is slimming? The clothing struggle plagues me on almost a daily basis, and I am confident that I am not alone in this.
Lets’ face it: though this pains me to admit, we live in a culture where how you look matters. The secret here is that the way you look does not just matter for others and how they perceive you; it matters for yourself. (*EMPHASIS ON YOU*) Confidence is not something you have, it is something you must create…and the right wardrobe, in the right colors can help you do just that!
Recently, I had the opportunity to meet with the specialists at House of Colour for a Color Consultation and I want to tell you all about what I learned!
My Personal Style Backstory
Growing up, I was always told how beautiful I was. It was the compliment I received from family, friends, and strangers. Now, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy people telling me that I was beautiful; in fact, I wanted to hear it.
As the years progressed, I let the word ‘beautiful’ define me, and slowly but surely, I thought it was the only thing I brought to the table. I had a learning difference, so I had to work harder at school than others. My sister didn’t have a learning difference. She was so smart and also an incredibly talented opera singer. Somethings are not genetic…and you should know that I cannot carry a tune in a bucket. In this game of comparison, I felt as though what I had to offer others was strictly on the surface.
Flash forward to having children. I gained and lost (literally) hundreds of pounds and started to feel as though the beauty that I was once known for was robbed from me…leaving me nothing worth bringing to the table.
If you have seen me in the past decade since having babies, you are probably aware that I started dressing like a stay-at-home Mom. Someone who owns 18 pairs of black yoga pants and wears those with a different workout shirt on a daily basis. Getting dressed was easy…as long as I didn’t have to go any place that required real pants to be worn.
In 2019 I went back to an office job and have struggled with what to wear on a daily basis ever since. Having followed Crystal on social media, I saw her magic and finally asked for an appointment.
What is House of Colour?
House of Colour provides the most sophisticated color and style analysis for men and women of all ages. The goal of your consultation is to determine colors that best suit your natural coloring, and the result is sure to help people like you and me create a wardrobe that makes you feel confident.
Their website says, “House of Colour believes that everyone is beautiful and it is our purpose to bring this belief out in everyone who seeks our services.” After my consultation, I am confident that they are doing just that through their color analysis consultations!
What happens during a color consultation with House of Colour?
A color consultation is a three-ish-hour process that helps to determine the colors that look best on you based on genetics, primarily in association with your skin tone.
The first phase of your consultation is to determine whether your most flattering colors are warm or cool tones. Once that is determined you will identify if you look better in bright or muted tones, revealing your color season.
If you pay close attention you will be able to watch yourself transform as colors are draped around your neck while sitting in natural light. It is essentially a process of elimination until your specialist finds the colors that look best on you!
The last phase of your consultation includes learning the shades of makeup that look best with your skin tone, and they can be applied in ten minutes – which is fantastic for those of us living busy lives.
Fun fact: Colors are wild when it comes to wardrobe. Did you know that some colors can potentially make you look sick? It’s true! Turns out my favorite colors to wear, including black, make a greyish tone appear under my eyes, essentially highlighting my mom of three exhaustion. Understanding what I was wearing actually contributed to looking more tired was truly eye-opening.
House of Colour Final Thoughts
I am so happy that I had a color consultation. I learned so many valuable things that allow me to feel confident in the clothes I wear, making it easier to get dressed in the morning as you always feel as though you are putting the best version of yourself forward.
- My season is autumn!
- Avoid black clothing at all costs, but especially when it is by my face.
- Blue-Red tones make me look sick.
- Both silver and gold flatter my complexion.
- I should avoid black mascara and stick to brown.
- Which colors look best on me, and they even give you a cool wallet with your colors in order to make shopping for new clothes a much easier task.
- Next, I need to book a style development consultation with them.
In my continuous pursuit of a minimalist lifestyle, this consultation allowed me to go through my wardrobe and donate all the items that aren’t in my color season, leaving me the items that I know look good on me. If you are diving into a minimalist wardrobe, this is a great place to start.
